Abby Mott has an unmistakable voice and a soulful, hooky songwriting style. Her songs are a unique combination of americana, indie pop, classical, and blues, cleverly arranged with imaginative lyrics.
Having just moved to Austin, TX, Mott plans to lay down tracks for her upcoming record "Mutiny!" in 2011/2012.
Last February, Mott released two tracks on February Records, "Elika Ray" and "You Can't Come Back (Angelina)." These two tracks are a precursor to her next album "Mutiny!" a record full of songs written over the past 2 years while Mott was living way out in the Pacific on the island of Luzon in the Philippines.
You can hear influences of classical, pop, and soul in Mott’s songs. She studied classical cello for 10 years, and had grew up on pop, oldies, and soul.
Mott cut her teeth playing around Baltimore and Washington, D.C. with a wild variety of bands. She played keys for soul band, the Octonauts, revved the crowd as a singer/dancer in the Baltimore Afrobeat Society, and spent 5 years co-fronting the popular 80’s cover band the Real Geniuses.
She's collaborated with friends and songwriters Michael Beresh, Flanagan Smith, Kristen Toedtman, Peter Towson, Wes Mattheu, Chris Pumphrey, Ben Forstenzer, and others. She has opened for Daniel Johnston, Rambling Jack Elliot, and Nicole Atkins.
Discography:
Mott first hit the studio in 2007, playing every instrument herself on her debut “Hearts a’Flutter.”
"Dave Nachodsky, (engineer and co-producer), likened it to watching the video of a kid on a bike for the first time. You want to see the wobbles, the reality of the moment, but nobody wants to watch the kid crash! We kept coming back to that idea.
”The result was what one reviewer described as “her own little world of sound.” It has an indie flavor, mixed with Americana and a pop/soul twist. They lyrics are dark but playful, evoking nostalgia, desire, and heartache.
After touring the area with her band, Mott was ready to go to the studio again in 2009, with the whole group this time.
Go West! Get East! contains 4 songs recorded with “Her Band” (Jason Hughes, Jay Novak, and Pat Blades), just before her departure from the states. The songs showed growth in Mott’s attention to production, as well as the strength and control in her vocal. She allowed a little country to seep into her voice, and stepped out, layering rootsy guitars, vocals, organ, and percussion. The lyrics are autobiographical, playful, and true.
The EP marked Mott's transition abroad, where began to concentrate entirely on her craft, writing in her home studio and performing around Manila. She spent almost all of her time there on music, martial arts, and cooking.
Mott now resides in Austin, TX where she plans to put down some real roots. |
